Part 1: Presentation and video

The following attachments must be uploaded in the application form.

Presentation: 

A written presentation in English (500-1000 words) describing your background and the focus for your studies. The following subjects should be addressed: 

  • Your musical background, your education, and your relationship to folk music
  • Your experience of making music in an ensemble or other musical communication, if any
  • Your other activities related to folk music (e.g. teaching, research, organising, volunteering or other communal activities)
  • Why you are applying to study in Nordic Master in Folk Music -degree programme

Video:

Videos of you performing a program with a maximum duration of 15 minutes. You have to prepare a minimum of 3 tunes from your folk music tradition that shows your breadth and knowledge within your tradition, your skill on the main instrument and your skills in interpretation. In addition to performing on your main instrument, you may include a sample of your secondary instrument and voice performance.

At least 2 of the tunes have to be performed solo/a capella, in one single video including presentations, without edits/cuts.

This test forms a basis for general entry requirements. In this test, your knowledge within your tradition and your skill on the main instrument and your skills in interpretation are assessed. Only applicants with approved Part 1 will be invited to take part in Part 2 and Part 3.

The results from part 1 will be announced no later than February 22nd.


Part 2: Online auditions

This part of the entrance tests will be conducted via a remote connection, such as Zoom. A stable internet connection is necessary for this test.

  1. Audition:
    You have to prepare at least three tunes from your folk music tradition that shows your breadth and knowledge within your tradition, your skill on the main instrument and your skills in interpretation. For instrumentalists, this can refer to different kinds of tunes and playing techniques. For singers it can refer to different kinds of song styles and singing techniques. At the audition, you will decide together with the jury, which tunes to perform.
    The tunes must be played by heart and solo/a capella.
  2. A short interview in English is included in the test. 

Duration of the test: approximately 15 minutes.


Part 3: additional test

This part of the entrance tests will be conducted via a remote connection, such as Zoom. A stable internet connection is necessary for this test.

This test has three parts: 

  1. Sight reading: You play/sing a tune from the Nordic folk music traditions, that the jury gives you shortly before the test. 
  2. Ear training: In this test you will play/sing a tune that you haven’t heard before. You will hear the tune, which is in folk music style, played three times on the piano, then you play it on your instrument.
  3. 2nd part/accompaniment: Your task is to improvise a 2nd part or an accompaniment to a tune that is presented to you at the test.

This test forms a basis for general entry requirements as well as selection.

Requirements

  • The entrance requirements are a passed Bachelor degree in music as well as an audition and interview.
  • The applicants must have a good command of the English language (assessed during the interview) as the common language is English.
  • The institutions can also recognize other relevant musical training as qualifying.
